Fly Fishing and Freshwater Adventures: Luxury Angling in the Indian Himalayas

India contains some of the world's last genuinely wild freshwater fishing — rivers that flow from the Himalayas through forests and valleys that have remained essentially unchanged for centuries, carrying fish that have never encountered a factory, a chemical, or an industrial bank. For the serious freshwater angler, India is one of the last great frontiers.

Two species define Indian luxury angling. The Golden Mahseer — one of the world's most powerful freshwater fish, growing to over 50 kilograms — inhabits the Himalayan rivers of Uttarakhand and the river systems of South India with a fighting quality that has drawn anglers from Britain since the colonial era. And the Snow Trout — a cold-water salmonid that inhabits the crystal-clear mountain rivers of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh — offers dry fly fishing of extraordinary beauty.

"The rivers of the Indian Himalayas fish as if no one has fished them before. In many of the best locations, no one has."

The Golden Mahseer — The Tiger of Indian Rivers

The Ramganga river in Jim Corbett National Park, and the river systems of Coorg in Karnataka, are the finest Mahseer fishing destinations in India. The Mahseer's power — its strength, its runs, its leaping fight — has been compared to the Atlantic salmon at its most powerful, in a fish that dwarfs it. Catch-and-release practices at the best Mahseer fisheries are strictly enforced.

We arrange private access to some of India's best-managed Mahseer stretches with expert local guides, staying at luxury fishing lodges or private camps positioned directly on the best pools.

Snow Trout and Dry Fly Fishing — Kashmir and Himachal

The rivers feeding Dal Lake in Kashmir — the Lidder at Pahalgam, the Sind near Sonamarg — carry Brown Trout introduced in the colonial era alongside native Snow Trout. Fishing these rivers with a dry fly, in a valley surrounded by Himalayan peaks, with a traditional Kashmiri breakfast waiting at the bankside camp, is an experience that ranks among the world's great angling days.

The Cauvery River — South India's Mahseer Stronghold

The Cauvery river system in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is managed by the Jungle Lodges network under strict conservation protocols — designated catch-and-release stretches, daily rod limits, and guide training programmes that have restored Mahseer populations significantly since the 1990s. Staying at the Cauvery Fishing Camp — a private riverside camp in the forest — and fishing the Cauvery's pools at dawn is one of India's most rarefied experiences.
