The perfect packing list for a luxury India journey is not the same as the perfect packing list for any other destination. India's climate diversity — from the high Himalayan cold of Ladakh to the humid heat of Kerala, from the desert nights of Rajasthan to the monsoon warmth of Mumbai — combined with the specific requirements of temple visits, palace hotel dress codes, safari mornings, and fine dining evenings, creates a packing challenge that benefits from genuine local knowledge.
This guide is compiled from years of briefing international guests before their India journeys — synthesising the feedback of those who packed perfectly and those who wished, at some point in the journey, that someone had told them what to bring.
"India requires you to pack for four climates, two dress codes, one adventure, and one formal dinner. It is possible. It requires a list."
The Clothing Essentials
Layering — The Non-Negotiable System
Whatever the season and whatever the primary destination, a layering system is essential for India. Air conditioning in hotels, vehicles, and restaurants is often powerful and cool; outdoor temperatures may be significantly warmer. The ability to add and remove layers throughout the day is more important than any specific garment.
Base layer (lightweight merino wool or quality cotton) + mid layer (light fleece or linen jacket) + outer layer (packable waterproof for monsoon travel or Himalayan visits) covers the full range of conditions in most India itineraries.
Temple and Heritage Site Clothing
Entry to Hindu temples, Sikh gurdwaras, mosques, and many heritage sites requires covered shoulders and knees at minimum. Several major temples require fully covered legs (long trousers or a longhi). Having a lightweight cotton scarf or wrap that can serve as a shoulder cover or leg wrap is more practical than packing multiple specific garments for this purpose.
? ATL Expert Tip: We provide a detailed dress code briefing for every heritage and religious site in your itinerary before departure — including the specific requirements of individual temples and monuments. No guest of ATL has ever been turned away from a site for inappropriate dress.
Safari Clothing
Safari mornings in Rajasthan and Central India are often significantly colder than afternoons — temperatures can be 10–15 degrees Celsius at dawn in October and November. Neutral-coloured (khaki, olive, grey) lightweight clothing with a warm fleece layer for the morning drive is ideal. Bright colours and white are not appropriate for wildlife photography and can disturb animals.
Footwear
- Comfortable walking shoes for heritage sites — cobblestones, uneven surfaces, and significant distances are normal
- Slip-on shoes or sandals for temple visits (shoes are removed at all religious sites)
- Sandals for beach and houseboat environments
- Lightweight trekking shoes if any Himalayan walking is included
Health and Comfort Essentials
- Electrolyte sachets — heat and activity create dehydration risks even for guests staying at fine hotels
- High-SPF sunscreen — India's sun is intense across most regions for most of the year
- Insect repellent (DEET-containing) for wildlife reserve areas, particularly at dawn and dusk
- Personal medications in adequate supply — specific pharmaceuticals may not be available in smaller destinations
- Probiotic supplement — taken for 2 weeks before arrival, significantly reduces digestive adjustment issues
Technology
- Universal adapter (India uses Type D and Type M sockets) — all luxury hotels have international adaptors but having your own is convenient
- Portable power bank — useful on long drives and safari days when charging is unavailable
- Offline maps downloaded for all destinations (Google Maps offline mode works reliably)
- WhatsApp — all communication with ATL, drivers, and guides throughout the journey uses WhatsApp
What You Do Not Need to Bring
- Toilet paper — all luxury hotels and quality restaurants provide this; unnecessary to pack
- Multiple formal outfits — one smart casual outfit per person is sufficient for the finest restaurants and palace hotels
- Guidebooks — your ATL guides know more than any published guide; a kindle for pleasure reading is more useful
- Large quantities of cash — all luxury hotels and most quality restaurants accept international cards; ATMs are widely available in cities
