India\'s Marine Life and Underwater Experiences: Diving and Snorkelling for Luxury Travellers

India's coastline stretches for over 7,500 kilometres and is bordered by three seas — the Arabian Sea to the west, the Bay of Bengal to the east, and the Indian Ocean to the south. Within this extraordinary maritime territory, and in the island territories of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago and the Lakshadweep atolls, lie some of Asia's finest and least-visited marine environments.

For the international diver or snorkeller seeking quality marine environments without the crowds of the Maldives, the commercialisation of Thailand, or the development pressure of Bali, India's waters represent one of the last genuinely uncrowded alternatives.

"The reef at Neil Island in the Andamans has 20-metre visibility and sees fewer than a dozen divers per day. This is what the Maldives was 25 years ago."

The Andaman Islands — India's Premier Dive Destination

The Andaman archipelago contains the most extensive and best-preserved coral reef system in the Indian Ocean — a consequence of its remote location (1,200 kilometres from the Indian mainland) and the restricted access that kept dive tourism at very low levels until recently.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Havelock is the centre of Andaman dive tourism — with 15 named dive sites within easy boat distance, ranging from beginner-friendly coral gardens at 5–8 metres to advanced drift dives at 25–35 metres with strong current and large pelagic species. The fish life is extraordinary — Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, reef sharks, sea turtles, and (seasonally) whale sharks and manta rays.

The finest dive operator on Havelock — Barefoot Scuba, run by a PADI IDC Staff Instructor with 20 years' Andaman experience — provides the quality of instruction and site knowledge that transforms a dive day into a genuine marine education. We arrange private guiding for our guests rather than shared dive trips.

Barren Island — India's Active Volcano

The only active volcano in South Asia sits in the Andaman Sea — a 354-metre cone that has been erupting continuously since 1991. Day-trip dive excursions from Havelock to dive the volcanic substrate around Barren Island — where the lava flows have created extraordinary underwater topography and the geothermal activity affects the water chemistry in visible ways — are among the most unusual dive experiences in Asia.

Lakshadweep — The Pristine Atoll Experience

The Lakshadweep atolls — 36 coral islands 200–440 kilometres from the Kerala coast — offer snorkelling and diving of extraordinary quality in an environment that sees less than 5% of the visitor numbers of comparable Maldivian atolls. The lagoon visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres, the coral gardens are largely undamaged, and the atoll fishing grounds support populations of large reef fish species that have been hunted out of more accessible locations.

Access requires a government permit (which we arrange), and the accommodation is limited to a small number of approved properties on Agatti and Bangaram islands — the latter a privately managed island resort of genuine quality. We arrange complete Lakshadweep marine packages combining accommodation, permits, and private dive or snorkel guiding.

Kerala Coast — Whale Watching

The waters off Kerala's southern coast between November and March are part of the migratory route of blue whales, sperm whales, and fin whales — with spinner dolphins, flying fish, and sea turtles as consistent companions. We arrange private whale watching day trips from Kochi and Kovalam with Marine Biologists from the Whale Watching Association of Kerala, who have 15 years of cetacean tracking data in these waters.
