Sri Lanka sits 30 kilometres off the southern tip of India, separated by a narrow strait, but worlds apart in character. The island nation — once called Ceylon, before that Serendib (the origin of the English word 'serendipity') — packs an almost implausible density of extraordinary experiences into a country the size of Ireland.
Ancient kingdoms. Rock fortresses. Buddhist temples that have been places of pilgrimage for 2,000 years. Misty tea plantations. Leopard reserves. Whale watching. And a coastline of such beauty that it has been drawing Indian Ocean travellers for centuries. Sri Lanka rewards the luxury traveller who approaches it with time and the right guide.
"Sri Lanka is what happens when an island decides to be everything at once — and succeeds."
The Cultural Triangle — Sri Lanka's Ancient Heart
The north-central interior of Sri Lanka contains three ancient capitals — Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya — that form what travel writers call the Cultural Triangle. Together, they represent one of Asia's most extraordinary concentrations of ancient architecture and Buddhist heritage.
Sigiriya — The Rock Fortress
Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's defining image: a 200-metre granite rock rising vertically from the jungle floor, topped by the ruins of a 5th-century palace built by King Kasyapa. The climb to the summit — past ancient frescoes painted directly onto the rock face, through the remarkable 'Lion's Paw' gateway — reveals a panoramic view of the surrounding jungle that is simply unforgettable.
? ATL Expert Tip: We arrange early morning Sigiriya visits (gates open at 7am) before the midday heat and crowds. A private guide who knows the archaeological detail makes the site's complex history come alive in a way that self-guided visits cannot replicate.
Dambulla Cave Temple
The Dambulla Rock Temple — five caves housing 157 Buddha statues and ancient fresco paintings dating to the 1st century BC — is Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple. The quality of painting and the atmosphere of active devotion make it one of the most moving Buddhist sites in Asia.
Kandy — The Sacred City
Kandy, in the central highlands, is Sri Lanka's cultural capital and home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic — the most sacred Buddhist site in the country, housing what is believed to be a tooth of the historical Buddha. The evening puja ceremony here, with its drumming, chanting, and incense, is one of Sri Lanka's great cultural experiences.
Kandy also marks the beginning of Sri Lanka's tea country — the journey from Kandy to Ella by train, passing through rolling hills of emerald tea plantation, is considered one of the world's most beautiful rail journeys.
The Tea Country — Nuwara Eliya and Ella
Sri Lanka's hill country produces some of the world's finest teas — Ceylon Orange Pekoe, Silver Tips, Dimbula. The landscape of terraced tea gardens at high altitude, worked by Tamil tea pluckers in bright saris, is visually extraordinary and culturally rich.
We arrange private plantation visits with factory tours, tea tastings guided by the estate's master blender, and stays at restored colonial planter's bungalows — private estates dating to the British colonial era, converted into intimate luxury properties of extraordinary character.
Yala National Park — Sri Lanka's Wildlife Crown
Yala National Park in Sri Lanka's southeast has the highest leopard density of any reserve in the world — a remarkable claim that it consistently fulfils for our guests. A dawn safari in Yala's Block 1, with an expert tracker, regularly produces multiple leopard sightings alongside elephant herds, sloth bear, crocodile, and extraordinary birdlife.
We combine Yala with the southern coast — where outstanding beach resorts provide the perfect de-compression after a journey through Sri Lanka's cultural and natural interior.
Combining Sri Lanka with India
Sri Lanka works beautifully as an extension of an India journey — direct flights connect Colombo with Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. We design combined India and Sri Lanka itineraries of 18–21 days that move seamlessly between the two countries, with a private guide and logistics team in each.
Contact Affluent Travel & Leisure to begin planning your Sri Lanka luxury tour, or to design a combined India and Sri Lanka journey. We have deep knowledge of both destinations and manage all arrangements personally.
